Automate

Automating a Topstep account

Read this part before anything else: TopstepX runs on ProjectX, and ProjectX is listed here but NOT selectable — it needs an API subscription that is not in place, and without it the adapter would fail at the first order. It is shown rather than hidden so you can see it is known about. If your Topstep account is on Rithmic or Tradovate, everything on this page applies; if it is on TopstepX only, it does not yet.

Checked against Tradeus on 14 September 2026.

Before you start

  • A Topstep account whose platform credentials are Rithmic or Tradovate. Check this first — it decides whether the rest of the page is usable.
  • Your own reading of your account's terms on automation and copy trading. We do not publish what each firm permits.
  • A Tradeus plan: any plan for the copier, Algo or Unlimited for the TradingView webhook.

Step by step

What to do, in order.

  1. 1

Check which platform your account is on before anything else

TopstepX is not connectable here today because it runs on ProjectX and that adapter is not live. A Rithmic or Tradovate login is. This is the first step rather than a footnote because it is the one that decides whether the other five are worth reading.

  2. 2

Connect the Rithmic or Tradovate login

Rithmic asks for a username, password, system and gateway — Rithmic Paper Trading is the system for evaluations and funded simulated accounts. Tradovate asks for nothing: it connects by OAuth and stores no password. Accounts appear underneath the connection by themselves.

  3. 3

Decide where the decision comes from

A chart alert means a strategy and a TradingView webhook; your own hand on one account means the copier. They are different tools and nothing stops you running both on different accounts.

  4. 4

Size each account for itself, then arm a loss limit

Give each account a dollar risk per trade rather than a contract count, so every account risks the same money on the same decision. Then set the daily loss limit before the first signal. Both of these are per account, because the accounts are not the same size and their rules are not the same either.

  5. 5

Test on the evaluation you have not passed yet

The account worth practising on is the one your firm already gave you. Everything here behaves identically on an evaluation, and a malformed alert there costs you the lesson rather than a funded account.

What goes wrong

Named after the message you will see.

Each of these is a line from the event log or from TradingView, written as it appears — because that is the string you will paste into a search box at the moment you need this page.

Buying first and checking the platform second

If your Topstep account is TopstepX only, nothing here connects to it yet. That is the one thing on this page worth checking before you spend anything.

Assuming the firm's rules from a third-party page

Automation and copy-trading rules differ per firm and per account, and they change. The only authority on yours is the agreement you signed — not this page and not a forum post.

“no subscription” — the alert arrived and nothing traded

The strategy received the signal and no account was following it. Open the strategy, add the account, and re-send. This accounts for more first-run confusion than every other cause put together, because the webhook itself answers perfectly well.

“invalid passphrase” after everything worked yesterday

Somebody pressed New passphrase. The old one stops working immediately and the alert in TradingView still carries it. Copy the current message off the strategy into the alert again.

“rounds to 0 contracts”

Dollar-risk sizing divided your risk budget by the stop distance and got less than one contract, and less than one contract is no trade. A wide stop with a small budget does this every time. It appears in the event log as a rejection rather than as a fill that went missing.

Questions

Asked before buying, answered either way.

Can I connect TopstepX?

Not yet. TopstepX runs on ProjectX, which needs an API subscription that is not in place, so the platform is listed but cannot be selected. It is shown rather than hidden so the gap is visible instead of being discovered after a purchase.

Does Topstep allow webhook automation?

That is Topstep's answer to give, and it can differ per account and change over time. We do not publish a list of which firms permit automation because we cannot keep one true. Read your own account's terms.

What if my Topstep account is on Rithmic?

Then it connects like any other Rithmic login: username, password, system and gateway, with Rithmic Paper Trading as the system for an evaluation or funded simulated account. The TradingView webhook path and the copier both work from there.
